Visakhapatnam: AMID talk of starting work in Visakhapatnam as the executive capital of Andhra Pradesh in a symbolic way sometime in May, the State Government has directed the officials to launch work on Metro Rail, Beach Corridor development and construction of Bhogapuram International Airport awarded to GMR Group and other key projects on a fast-track mode.
At a high-level meeting held on Tuesday, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy told the officials to prioritise the projects and complete them as per timelines. He said periodic reviews would be held to clear bottlenecks, if any. Acquisition of private land by Vizianagaram district is in progress for the Bhogapuram International Airport, about 50 km from Visakhapatnam. There is a proposal to shutdown Visakhapatnam Airport, owned by the Navy after the Bhogapuram Airport is ready for commercial operations.
The Chief Minister also told the officials to complete work on diversion of Godavari water to Visakhapatnam through pipeline so as to meet the requirement for 30 years. For laying Beach Corridor from Bhimili to Bhogapuram, an estimate has been made for Rs 1,167 crore (including land acquisition cost). An action plan will be finalised soon.
Metro Rail will be laid for 76.9 km from Visakhapatnam to Bhogapuram with 53 stations.
